Back-to-School Feast

This was the last day of summer vacation for our elementary and junior high kids. We like to have a Back-to-School Feast to celebrate the end of summer and beginning of a new school year. We spent our day cooking food, working on decorations and table settings and of course, eating. We had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, a garden salad with croutons, homemade rolls and orange juice. We were going to have pie, and I even made up the crusts, but we decided we had so much food, we'd save the pies for tomorrow night. Getting it all together took longer than we anticipated, so postponing the pies was also a time saver. Most of us were too full to have dessert anyway, so it worked out just fine. Ezra, Claire, Talley and Esther had either cookies or a popsicle for dessert, because little kids never pass up on dessert. :-)

Over dinner we discussed school and talked about any concerns the kids might have. It was a lovely dinner. Even Henry ate a lot of food, and he hasn't been feeling so well lately.

Tomorrow morning the craziness begins ... whether we're ready or not. ;-)

Some of the kids shucking corn (Ryland, Ezra, Esther and Talley were the helpers on this task.)

Sahara hanging up the tissue paper balls.

Ryland and I had fried chicken duty.

Tim, Sahara and Bethlehem made the salad.

Ezra, supervising.

The table all set up by Kenyon, Esther, Claire, Ezra & Talley.

Kenyon loves to light the grill and looks forward to the day that he is old enough to do the actual grilling. Claire is supervising.

Henry & Talley. Henry basically wore his jammies all day, excluding his pants. Henry is not a big fan of wearing pants. Henry hasn't been feeling well lately, so he has been taking it easy. He does like wearing his shoes, though, and had been playing in the backyard right before these photos were taken. He was sitting on the chair and being hand-fed by Tim and I. He is so spoiled. :-)

Talley's food.

Some of the kids starting to eat, because they were really hungry.
